Our sweet little girl pup, Nutmeg, has a problem with her left eye. The opening is smaller (shorter) than the right one, so she can't open it as far. (With both eyes closed, the slit for the left one is a third shorter in length than the right one.) Does anyone have any ideas what I should do? I really don't want to take her to the vet if they're just gonna tell me it's only "fixable" through surgery. I can't afford it and I don't want to put her through that; she's only 3 weeks old. She's just fine otherwise! Thanks!

If she's only 3 weeks old, then it likely will resolve on it's own. Sometimes pups get one eyelid that sticks a bit. You could try applying a warm, wet cloth very gently to that eye to see if it loosens. I think with time, it will probably get better.

Being dark-eyed, tho, I can see the dark line when her eyes are closed. It stops sooner on the left. I'll try the warm cloth though. Had to do it with one of the mom's when we first got them. Thanks!

I had a pup whos eye didn't open in my second or third litter For weeks he was a one-eyed gerbil and then suddenly the eye was normal!!! He must have been around 4/5 weeks when it suddenly sorted itself. So don't panic, it should sort itself in time

Thanks, "doom"! I've come to the conclusion that since it doesn't look irritated, I'm not gonna worry about it. She's fine in every other way!

if the worst came to the worst and she had a deformed eye would it be the end of the world anyway?? After all I have a bobtail gerbil To me if a gerbil isn't perfect (in show terms) then he/she becomes a loved pet. so long as you don't breed from them and give them a lot of love and a good home the rest is academic. they can't all win cards and rosettes But I'm sure it will grow normally in time.

Yep; she's a keeper! I don't show any of my gerbils and I'm not sure if I ever will. I just got 'em to love! It looks a little more open today, so I think she's just a slow poke!

Same gerbie, same eye. It's always been open juuuust a bit less than the "good" one, but lately I've noticed the red discharge more frequently. I looked up the allergies section on Gerbils Anon. and will try the suggestions, but I'm curious...Why only the one eye? Anyone else ever had this problem?

I had a similar problem with Jasper. Only one eye ever had discharge. It resolved when I added more shavings to their tank + sand for a potty. I think he was irritated by the smell of his own pee .
