Hey there, My boyfriend's gerbisl are two male siblings, about 2.5 years old. For the past two weeks one of them has been chasing him and mounting him to the extent that his brother squeaks. It's happening all the time and it's making us feel really bad because we're unsure of what to do. Up until this point they havent had any problems. He's eating, he gets humped, he's chewing cardboard he gets humped. It's a humpathon.
We're unsure if we should leave them be and keep an eye on them or try to seperate them because there is a lot of squeaking; there's been no blood or fighting at the moment.

Any new smells that may have been introduced? A new pet? A new toy? Visitors? Cleaned the house recently? A few months ago, my girls started squabbling. mounting, and chasing over an empty cardboard Q-tip box, of all things. I removed the stupid box and peace was restored!
I'd continue keeping a close eye on them.

If the chasing is at high speed, even bumping into walls, and the squeaking is loud, they're declanning and would need to be separated. If it's not that serious just give them some extra cardboard boxes or jars; places to hide and things to do and keep an eye on them.

qtoffer: I've actually moved into my boyfriends around the time they started -is it me?? Hah. I bought 3 other male gerbils (in different tanks obviously) but they're in a separate room. johanne: I wouldnt say it's high speed, he does it when the one being mounted is trying to do normal activities, there is some chasing sometimes but it's more a fast walk than anything. Here's a video I made: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ir9PDs3x60Obviously, NSFW - gerbil humping, excuse the bf's guildwars reflection/keyboard tapping hah...

It's probably you. LOL And though they can't see the other gerbils in your house, I'm sure they can smell and hear them. When my wife and I finally got a place together, my adult gerbils suddenly started thumping like pups again. Within a few weeks, they stopped. I guess it took them some time to process all the new smells from her stuff and from her cat (who is actually terrified of the gerbils and stays as far away from them as possible).
The pied gerbil is certainly scent marking the other, but it looks more like following than chasing. I'd continue to keep an eye on your two and have a plan in place just in case you do have to separate them - including a pair of gardening work gloves near the tank in case you ever have to break up a fight.

It doesn't look like you have anything to worry about. They'll probably settle down soon enough
