I finally joined two of my ten gallon tanks together. I couldn't find a drainage tube that was in my price range, so I used a piece of flexible metal dryer exhaust pipe. Both gerbils have already figured out how to go up and down through the tube. It took a few tries, but they're having fun now ;D. Here's a pic: I wish that I could just put the tanks one on top of the other in the bookcase. That way the gerbils wouldn't need to crawl as far to the next tank. Unfortunately, the middle shelf cannot be moved because it is part of the structural support . I'm glad they figured it out, however, and now I'm going to fill the other tank with cardboard ;D.

Queenie, Is it metal? I have only seen the flexi aluminum which is like the aluminum foil. It is very thin.

Yeah, the metal is quite thin. It's thicker than aluminum foil, though. Unfortunately the gerbs chew on it a bit. I eventually want to phase that type of setup out, unless I can find something in plastic that has a large enough diameter.
