Hey everyone, I'm getting ready to set up my boys' new aquarium, but I had a question. I've seen pictures on here where part of the tank was sectioned off for water/food/etc. My question is how do you attach the cardboard divider? Thank you!

When I did that (before moving the food and water to our topper), I actually used a narrow cardboard box (it happened to be a Lego box) stood on edge. I cut the box length-wise so that it would fit snugly across the width of the tank, and with the box having some width to it (2-3 inches), it kind of stood on it's own. With about 6 inches of bedding on the "high side" a couple inches on the "low side", and a couple inches of bedding inside the box itself the box was fairly stable. The food bowl against the box helped hold it too. I cut a few holes through the box to allow passage back and forth. The box did tip sometimes toward the low side, but never fell... and that low side was only 6 inches or so across, so at worst, the box would fall over against the wall, and end up being like a roof over the low side, it couldn't fall all the way down... I hope that makes some sense... and anytime I noticed it tipped, I just tipped it back up straight (couple times a day). Here's a photo that sort of shows it. This is just how I did it, I'm sure others have better ideas.

I've tried that and my gerbils always end up digging underneath it, pushing the box up, and then tipping it over.

I didn't have much of a problem with that, but then I was doing this when the gerbils were newly adopted, and young, and they hadn't developed much of a tunneling habit yet.
Mine did tip somewhat from time to time, but seldom enough, and minor enough, that it wasn't a big idea to just straighten it when I noticed it tipping.
If it became a nuisance, I would probably use some small gauge steel wire or something, thread a length of it through the cardboard on either end, and bend the other end of the wire up over the lip of the tank, front and back, to sort of hang the divider.
You could always hot glue (make sure the glue is safe/non-toxic) the divider to the tank walls, but then it's more cumbersome to replace or remove.

I've seen people use bendy bridges as a divider thats what im planning to do and to make it more secure you could Velcro it to the glass

I'm sorry, gerbilover9612, but how does that work? Do you mean putting one end of the bridge on the floor of the tank and one on the screen?

Hi, how did it go? Did you manage to set up a split? We did the same thing 2 months ago, used three sides of a shoe box (actually a boot box!), and it's still standing!! They have chewed a doorway in it so that they don't have to jump over (the saw dust/hay was about 2 inches lower that the top of the divider initially) and also a hole in the bottom, but it still works really well. We've been saving boxes from presents this morning for when we eventually have to replace it! Merry Christmas/happy holidays!
