My gerbil, Atticus, used to be the world's fastest and most dedicated chewer of cardboard tubes, but two days ago I put 2 tubes in his cage and they are still sitting there with just a little chewed off each end. This is very unusual for him, although he seems normal in every other way - he's eating, drinking, running to me for treats, etc. I tried looking at his teeth and they look okay, except maybe on top they might be wearing (or chipped?) on one side more than the other. I have not found a good exotics vet, so I'm hesitant to take him to the vet, especially as he seems normal in all other ways. Any suggestions? By the way, Atticus is approx. 2 years old.

Hey Pogo, Try some other type of box! If you have a white paper plate that is not waxed, try that. Mine love it. ! pair of my 4 would rather chew boxes like ceral rather than towel tubes or heavier card board. That pair also would rather have wood so it is not the teeth that is the problem.

Atticus has always loved toilet paper and paper towel tubes. That's why this is so unusual for him. He can usually shred a toilet paper tube before I've finished feeding him and filling his water bottle. Maybe I will try a couple different tubes, though - maybe there's just something about these two that he doesn't like, although he did nibble on the ends a little...

How uneven are the teeth? If it is more than a millimeter than he can't chew properly. You would need to get his other tooth clipped to line them up properly.
