I have a male on his own, he is about a year old. A few months ago he had a bad fight with his tank mate- they were lucky not to kill each other. Since then he has been incredibly aggressive towards other gerbils, male or female. I did try to introduce him to another very docile male, thinking that he would calm down eventually, but I had to abandon it as trying to swap them was getting really dangerous. He escaped when at my friends while I was on holiday, and tried to attack my other gerbils, throwing himself at their tanks. So he is alone now.
He doesn't like being handled much and sometimes bites unexpectedly, out of fear I think. He hates me to disturb his bedding and runs round anxiously scent marking. I have tried letting him out in the kitchen but he gets terribly hyper and bites when I try to catch him again.
I worry that he is so alone and not getting any interaction. He seems happiest on his own with his own smells and no disturbance, but surely he can't be happy really.
Any advice- should I persist with interacting with him daily and see if he gets better or should I let him do his own thing? He's in a 2.5 foot tank and always has lots of cardboard etc. thanks Wokette

No matter what, you need to interact with him. He doesn't sound lonely from your description. Have you tried rubbing your hands in his sawdust? Make sure he has quite a lot of wooden toys and card to he chewing on. Lonely gerbils require more attention.
