on of my gerbils (pooky) is in a split cage with another and i am introducing them. at the moment taco (the other one) is akting fine, and is just going about his normal bisness but pooky is acting weird. he stayes in one spot for a long period of time, then moves in short jerky movments to another spot. in other words, he stays still, then moves about 5 cm then stays still then moves about 5 cm over and over again. sometimes he will also just sit there and not move for about 3-4 minitues. its hard to explain, but im really woried is this a stroke? or is it the pressure of being in a split cage with another gerbil? please help me!

It kind of sounds like the movements some of my pups have made. It looks robotic, where they jerkily move from one place to another. Does that sound similar to what you are seeing. This happened with my pups when they saw or heard something unusual. I think the response was from being startled.

but now hes just standing in the corner not doing anything. he hardly respondes to my touch, and i have to nudge him quite a bit to make him move about. when i try to force him out of his corner, he resists, and goes back there to sit and do nothing. is this a sign of a stroke? could he be doing this because of temperature? any help would be apreciated.

I'm sorry pooky, I have no idea. I've never dealt with that before . Hopefully someone else reconizes those symptoms and can help you.

The first , jerky action I ahve seen a number of times. It always reminds me of timelapse photography. I suspect it;'s a way of moving while being very alert and listening to their surroundings, but I haven't read about it anywhere.. Freezing without reponse at all is usally a type of seizure

when i click on the link, it says "page cannot be displayed." taco seems to be getting a bit better, but im not sure. he wont accept treats, and spends alot of time in his bed. hes stopped the jerking though. what happens when gerbils have seizures? i thought a seizure was alot of thrashing around and twiching. but mabe im wrong.

pooky it sounds like a mild seizure. Some gerbils are naturally epileptic when they are given new stimuli, such as being placed in a new environment or when stressed. It doesn't harm them, usually, and will wear off as the gerbil grows older. Hope that reassures you.
