Well, as most of you know, clyde had a stroke a couple of weeks ago. In the past couple of days, he took a turn for the worst and lost alarming amounts of weight. As of yesterday, he could no longer walk. I called the vets, and asked about euthanasia, but they said that they only inject gerbils, not gas them, which is painful...and it was 40 dollars for each gerbil. (I wanted to get Bonnie put to sleep as well, as they're a couple, and she would get very lonely...and, the vet thinks she had a giant tumor in her stomache)
So, I talked to some vets and some people at the Valley Zoo, and they reccomended C02 gassing for a humane euthanasia, so thats what I did.
For anyone that's interested, here is how I did it:
1) I took Bonnie and Clydes Coconut house, with them in it, and put it in an icecream container, and put the lid on. They didn't wake up when I did this.
2) I poked a small hole in the lid and ran a clear hose into the container where they were.
3) bonnie woke up, so I waited until she went back into the coconut and went to sleep.
4) I put baking soda into a garbage bag, and then poured vinegar into the bag.
5) I put the other end of the hose into the garbage bag, so that the C02 produced by the vinegar and baking soda would go through it, and into bonnie and clydes container.
6) I opened b and c's container to allow the C02 to push the air out.
7) I waited for five minutes, adding more baking soda and vinegar to produce more gas.
8) I pushed all of the gas into the container, and sealed it.
9) I waited for 20 mins and then checked on them. They were dead, in the same positions they were sleeping in, curled up together in thier coconut. I don't think they even woke up.
So, that's the end of my poor Bonnie and Clyde. They were awesome little gerbils, and they'll be missed But, they died in their sleep, together, which was the best I could possibley do for them.
RIP
