my female gerbil recently lost her mate of 3yrs and she appeared fine. thats was about 3 months ago. lately i noticed her not eating or drinking very often, sleeping alot, and not even wanting to chew. today she has been running around like she is blind and refusing 2 eat. she has also been breathing very heavily. please reply!

I'm sorry that your gerbil is sick. It may just be that she is getting old. The best thing to do would be to take her to the vet. You said her breathing is heavy, is she clicking at all? Sometimes older gerbils can get upper respiratory infections because their immune system is compromised. The blindness worries me though. Is her water bottle working properly?

that is a big shame but remember 2 years is old in the wild, so 3 years is a good gerbil age and you obviously cared for her well. God bless
