I have a ruby eyed gebril and I noticed that there is some red stuff in the corner of one of his eyes. Anyone know what this could be?

Don't quote me on this, but I read somewhere (sadly I don't recall where) that a gerbil's mucus is red. If this is true, it could simply be something is irritating your gerbils eyes and cuasing them to water more than usual.
Can anyone verify this?

In gerbils it is indeed reddish! Don't worry!

Have you changed the bedding? I think that if it is an allergy, you might want to consider removing the allergen so the gerbil does not have to deal with it.

I have not changed the bedding or anything else. The redness seems to be going away a little.
But, I am noticing that the other two gerbils do not seem to be paying attention to her. I have a two story cage and she just sits on the top story all day alone and the other two sleep together on the bottom.
Could they be ignoring her because of this eye thing?

The eye thing might suggest that she is not completely healthy! As normal healthy gerbils have clean eyes! They can have that reddish stuff sometimes, but not all the time and for a long time! That she is so lethargic can suggest this too! Normal healthy gerbils are lively. Does she eat normal? And what is her age?

Hey Minn, If she is unhealthy, you may want to separate her. Gerbils tend to *hurt* those that are unhealthy.

She is only about three months old. She does NOT seem lethargic at all. She is very live ly and plays with the other two all the time. The eye thing does not seem to be getting any better though. It seems like it is difficult for her to open her eyes. Is there any type of drops or medication that could help this?

My gerbil, Jasper, is red-eyed and used to get that discharge quite often. Once I started giving them a sand bath as a toilet and changing that frequently, the discharge stopped. I don't know, maybe he was allergic to his own pee?

I am glad to hear the the gerbil is playful. I hope the discharge stops. What have you tried? Is it the same, better, or getting worse?

I have not really done much for her because she is so playfull and it doesn't seem to be bothering her that much. I got some really expensive but healthy food for her. She is doing a lot better and I think it is almost gone.
