Hey so my cats are a problem they are too keen on the gerbils and have already bit the tip of clanks tail off, can anyone suggest anything i can use instead of the wire cage that is attached to their gerbilarium? Because i dont want to have to make a bin cage as i dont think pets at home would return it once used?

Find a used aquarium. Fish people will sell them for cheap if there's a minor defect making them no longer water-tight.

The answer to my cats curiousity was making the gerbils inaccessible. I bought a tank, a double stand that fit the tank and a topper ( the tank is on the top half) its also not near anything so my cat can not jump up there.

a larger used tank so the gerbils have more space to run around and not use a topper at all, would probably be best with a good screen cover, you can also buy special clips for the screens so it can't be opened(usually where you buy screens from which may be in the reptile section of a pet store).

We've always used this tank type recently from pets at home: We had the normal cage and they would empty the sawdust and bedding out through the bars. We tried the gerbilarium from pets at home and they didn't like it, only ever sat at the bottom part never coming to the caged part higher up. The quality wasn't great either. The tanks work well, though the last guys we bought with a new tank almost never happened as the person serving us claimed they were unsuitable for gerbils. We've been using them for the past 10 years now and 22 gerbils without a problem. Should be cat safe.

It is kinda small for a permanent tank, but the principle might work for the original thread. Is there anyway that you could attach something like plastic sheets or a thinner mesh around the cage part of the gerbilarium so that the tails and toes can't come out through it and therefore are safe from cat grabs?
If the cage is only accessible from the sides, then perhaps some large modified book ends might do the trick to block the cats view of then when he jumps up close.
How has it been since you last wrote dearmarie21?

You can get ZooZone cages just like the picture Vexorg posted. With the wire mesh at the top and clear sides along the outside You can get them from Amazon fairly cheap Hope I helped PetMad15
