Can gerbils hiccup? one of my gerbils seem like they do. she stays in one place and sorta jumps (like she's got jumped). what is happening? maybe a respiratory infection?

Hello,
In the past I had a gerbil who did this also. He did it when he got scared because I opened the cage to fast or came in the room to loudly. But this gerbil also was epileptic.
Kind regards,
Naomi

Gerbils can definitely jump when startled, and I don't know of any reason why their diaphragm can't get out of babance like ours to cause hiccups. If your gerbil is starting a R.I. I would expect it to be there permanently, not sporadically.Doesn't hurt to keep an eye in case, but, sounds very un-likely. If your gerbil is slightly nervous,I would try and keep hand movements steady, and, try to increase it's confidence.

Thanks everyone! She's still doing it, but I'm keeping an eye on her. I'll post for changes!
