i have heard that you probably shouldn't give them cotton? is this true? and if so, what about tissues and paper towels?

Tissue and kitchen roll/paper towels are fine as long as they're not scented but anything that seems to resemble cotton wool is a no-no. . Hope that helps.

I also give mine sheets of plain paper which the love.I you keep them in a cage threading a bit of toilet roll through the bars and letting them pull in a whole big length themselves is really fun.

most supermarkets do cheap brand toilet, facial and kitchen tissue. be ti 'value' or 'smartprice' etc. these are ideal for gerbils. Andrex, Charmin, anything with 'balm' or 'extra soft' or coloured is best avoided.
Our bottoms and noses may appreciate them but gerbils don't need it.
