Hello gerbil lovers, I have 3 gerbils, one is white with red eyes, 2 are wild colour (brown and grey). The white one is Jip and since last Friday I found out that he has an abces or tumor on his belly. It was open and bleeding because of an infection. He got an antibiotica shot (don't know if I say it correct in English) and Monday he will get another one. Because he is still very lively and drinks and eats normally he doesn't seem sick. The docter advised not to operate because he can stay in the narcose. Picture how he looks now: naomi.sunsplace.net/Diversen/P1010003.JPGMy question is: Did someone of you ever let your little gerbil operate on a tumor on the outside? Thanks for your story, advise or help. Kind regards, Naomi

Sorry to learn that Jip had and abscess or tumour, hopefully,it will not come back and he will make a full recovery. So far,I have not ever found a veterinary surgeon (animal Dr.) who would operate on a small rodent for a tumour, but,I haven't had a rodent with one for many years.I would certainly try,if I thought it was necasary. I am pleased that you had a vet, who was prepared to try and treat your gerbil, and,he appears to be making a full recovery ,that is very good news. May I ask what country you live in ? Lyd

Yes, one of my males had a scent gland tumor removed when he was about a year old. My vet used isoflurane gas to anesthetize him and he recovered with no problems at all. Here's the tumor: The day after the surgery: Five days after: He was totally healed in a little less than two weeks. RW

One of the Vet clinics I worked at did many operations on rats, tumor removals and spays. We probably would have doen hamsters and such too, but being so small you do have a chance of loosing them So far from people I have heard having operations done on there rodents not one has died from complications I would say if he isn't to old, and the wound is allready getting cut open and getting infected, Surgery may be a good idea.

Thanks for your replies on my post! My gerbil is 2 1/2 years old, so not very young anymore. Tomorrow I will go to the vet again and ask him again what he thinks and what is possible. Jip is not very happy anymore at the moment. But to hear that they are being operated succesfully gives me hope on recovery of Jip! Thanks. kind regards, Naomi

Oooh, lucky, Amsterdam. I'm going there for my 18th birthday...
One of my gerbils, a long time ago, had a scent gland tumor removed. The vet had never done one before, so she only charge 60 bucks. The surgery was succesful, and all was well....but a few days later, while changing her bandage, she had a heartattack and died.
Good luck with your gerbil!

Hi I´ve gone through that all two weeks ago, too. One of my gerbils had a tumor on his belly, too. Fortunatelly he´s doing well and has gotten over it very fast. (He´s "King of the cage" again! ;D) I was quite scared when it came to surgery and I really thought I might have made the wrong decision. But after all I have to say that I´m glad that I gave it a try!
Greatings, Sabine

Hello all, I am very relieved that it went so well, the surgery and I hope so too that he will recover very will and can live for a few years with his little friends Knabbel & Babbel. I think he really misses them now. I left him seperate since last week Thursday. Sabine, I am glad that your gerbil recovered very well. Did you put your gerbil seperate too before and after surgery? And for how many days? Did you use a special method to let them get used to each other again (if you put him seperate). greetings Naomi
