That is very good news, that another gerbil has also survived surgery.Obviously, the more gerbils who go through these procedures, the better our vet's will become at treating them.
As you've separated yours Naomi, you will need to re-introduce them.If he smells strange,(like a vet's surgery) he may be attacked,or just because he has been absent for so long, they've forgotten him.I'd use a split cage method, and, hopefully they'll all be happy together again.

When my gerbil had the surgery, I took his tankmate with him and put them back together at the vet's office shortly after the one who had the tumor removed woke up. There weren't any problems at all. They smelled each other, the tankmate gave the patient a good grooming, and that was that. They slept together all the way home in the car, about an hour's drive.
I always take tankmates when one of my gerbils goes to the vet, so that they're both exposed to the same smells. Both get handled by whoever handles the sick one--vet, vet techs, etc. I've never had any trouble between tankmates over vet visits and, by taking them together, I don't have to worry about re-introducing them later.
I think Lydia is right. Since Jip has been separated from his companions and they've probably either forgotten him or he won't smell "right" now, split-caging would be the way to go.
Hope everything works out for Jip and his buddies.

Hello, Thanks for your advises. I will try the split cage method (have to read how it exactly works, but I have an idea about it ) Jips brother died already a year ago , don't know the cause. After he died I picked up Knabbel & Babbel, they were very young than. They liked each other very much from the beginning. I didn't use the split cage method here, because it should work when one is adult and others are very young. So I hope they will recognize each other again and after the split cage method are fond of each other again! ;D gr. Naomi

Hi Naomi I was quite lucky with the introducing - thing. Sirius only had to stay in a seperated cage for one day after the surgery. The vet said he only had to "wake up completely" and then could join the others again. It worked out pretty well. The others took him back without any problems. The group lives together for almost two years now. So I guess it was no problem that one was apart for such a short time. I gave Sirius a part of the nest the group sleeps in to keep the group´s scent "alive" around him but honestly I don´t know if he would have survived a whole week being seperated from the others. He was so sad after only 24 hours. Of course he first still had to wake up but in the end it looked like he was totally depressed from being alone. When he got back into the big cage it only took a short time until I saw him running around, having something to eat and drink. He first hid under a piece of wood were the group usually doesn´t sleep but after a couple of minutes one of the other two gerbils joined him there. In the evening I found all three squeezed into one of their favourite places ( a small terracotta - house for fish) again, which made me fear for Sirius´ stiches. But, well.... Gerbils.... what more do I have to say! Greatings, Sabine

Thank you all for sharing your experiences. That is what really makes this forum so wonderful.
I also had 2 of my males neutered and had to keep them separated for a few days until the incisions healed. The vet said that it is best not to put them in the wood shavings and that the partner might nibble at the wound.
After a week of being separated, the intros went well. I only split caged one for a day and the other for 2 days.

Hello,
My vet also told me to keep him seperate so his mates wouldn't get near the wound. Also my sister advised me not to put him on woud shavings. I keep him on tissues know and change this every day. He had to get used to it, but that's going fine know. I also put sometimes a tissue from him with his buddies and put a tissue from his buddies in his cage. Than I hope the re-introduction will get better. I will keep you informed on how the re-introduction will go.
greetings Naomi

Hello, it was a long time since I wrote on this forum, but it is going very very well with Jip He has his normal size back (a bit to fat now, just like his buddies ) When I don't forget it I will put some pictures of them on this forum. Always nice to see how an operation on such a little animal worked out really well!!! ;D Naomi
