Hello, I am new here! (but not new to gerbils!)
I have had five wonderful gerbs throughout my childhood... Fascinated by them since first grade. They were all very unique gerbils with unique personalities... and unique deaths...
Of my first female pair (my 2nd grade teacher gave to me ) :
-Smokey - about three days before her death, her leg somehow disappeared. I searched far and wide in the litter but found nothing. (perhaps they ate it?)... She did have a previous leg injury (I cannot remember which side)... As I was holding her she jumped out of my hand and hurt it. It was kind of odd because she was 'normally' very lethargic and easy to handle.
Dirty - the only one that really died peacefully. She died a few months after Smokey at about four years of age. We were great friends.
Christina- One single gerbil was given to me by my 2nd grade teacher after her brother died..she was old and suffered a stroke(??head tilt). Christina also had developed some kind of tumors on both thighs and drank excessive amounts of water. She also had diarrhea and pooped constantly. When I found her dying, she had an open wound, and was stuck between a used soup can and her running wheel(helped her out though). It was kind of cute to see that she very slowly waddled all the way across her cage and into a cardboard box, where she died.
my last pair, two males I purchased at a pet store:
Fish- (named because he had bulging eyes as a youngin)At only about two years old, I found him dead with gaping wounds... Why, I do not know, but he may have gotten stuck in something or his buddy might have gotten in a fight with him.
Timber- He was a frisky little fellow (a little belligerent after his brother died)... One day I had gone away for awhile and came back with him out of his cage (my fault because I left the lid open on accident! )... fortunately, he made a safe landing down about 3 feet from my dresser (I had left the drawers open..gnawed on my clothes!). He hid under my bed and I fed him snacks to try and lure him out. Then my mom came in and tried to help me. She tried trapping him with boxed that were on my floor, but as he was running, she slammed a box against the wall and crushed his wittle body (on accident of course... but she didnt seem sad about it.. she doesnt like gerbs ) ... Saddest day in gerb history...
I'm sorry I wrote so much, but I have so much to say! If any of you have feedback or suggestions of causes of death/ailment of my gerbs, I would love to hear them! Thank you!
