This is the third time my gerbil has surprised me. The first time he was really ill, so ill that i had booked him to be put to sleep and with only half an hour to spare, he had perked up.
The second time he had developed a lump above his eye, on his eyelid which healed up after a week or two.
The third time, i had noticed he had a scent gland tumour, it was bleeding badly and he was quite ill with it. I had taken him to the vet, thinking he had to be put down. The vet and myself discussed treatment and we thought we'd try antibiotics then if he was better we could remove the tumour or, if he didn't recover, we could put him to sleep.
Except, i just noticed tonight, after he was ill this morning, that his tumour has been removed entirely. His scent gland has a red, smooth mark on it and it's completely clean.
I'm assuming his tentative cage mate has chewed it off. I'm keeping him on the antibiotics in the meantime. I have a vets appointment booked for 5 days time just in case
Has this ever happened to you before? Will it be ok? It was fairly large and messy before so i'm quite shocked that it's all gone
Thank you!

No, never had one heal like that. They might chew it, it we've had problems with some that wouldn't stop biting their wounds.

His belly is great right now, like it was before but with a little mark...how strange, i didn't find the actual tumour lump in the cage so i don't know what they did with it. Gross but i'm just glad he's ok!

It could have been a crusty abscess as these can look quite solid and then just burst. Although I am sure a good small animal vet would have been able to tell the difference by touching it - but then one vet I went to once refused to even touch my gerbils just poked at them in the carrier? Did yours get a really good look at it?
While it is unlikely that a gerbil would have safely and neatly chewed a tumour off his friend, anything is possible? I wish mine would have done that and save me the surgery worries of my SGT op...
