Crystal has learnt to wag her tail really energetically while sitting by the cage door to tell us she really wants to come out now (a bit like a gerbil tantrum), it's so adorable and so clever, she seems to have realised that for her to communicate wiith us it needs to be really obvious. She's done it 3 times so far in about a week (and because I find it adorable and she clearly wants a run around I always give in and let her out).

One of ours sits up on the hanging ladder bars staring at the locks when he wants out.

Lol, creepy staring gerbils XD
Mine also chew around the doors to say they want out, but this particular one is in a split currently (hoping to try them out together tomorrow *fingers crossed*) and so she does this tail wagging tactic when she's on the side with the door on the roof.

thats so cute. ^^; my gerbils never wanted to come out. having them out of the cage seemed to stress them more than anything else (partially because the being-picked-up part was not their fave)

Of all the gerbils we have we only have one pair of girls & one pair of boys who really enjoy out of tank playtime. They boys don't do anything to let us know when they want out but the girls sit near the door of their topper & stare.
Tail wagging is something I didn't even realise gerbils could do! Very sweet tho.

All 5 of ours really enjoy being out, we have it set up with Crystal and Silver that we can just open the cage door and they can climb out by themselves so she's not asking to be held, just for the door to be opened lol. I would love to get a vid for you guys, but you just never know when she's going to do it and she only swishes it back and forth a few times before she stops. None of them particularly enjoy being picked up out of their cages but Crystal has got so used to being carried upstairs for a run on the bed that she now just lies on my hand passively until she gets there, we stroke her lots like that and she only starts to move around if it takes too long and she starts to think we're not going upstairs XD She also sometimes sits on our knees and wags too! I'm guessing just to say she's happy.

I don't take my gerbils out much, but my trio will all huddle into the corner and stare up at the lid when I am giving them treats, or when they want treats. They try it every time I walk by them

ohh that's so cute! crowley climbs up to his topper and starts banging on the bars when he wants out, or when i'm sitting nearby and he wants a treat/some of whatever i'm eating.

Mine hang off the bars or just sit and stare creepily Hahaaa love it! I changed the water earlier and they were fighting over the bottle spout. Kendal stands above Keswick and pushes her head down with her paw in quite a human fashion and has a swig of the water. I said "oi, don't be rude!" and she turns her back on Kes and kicks shavings at her in disgust as she burrowed underground. Most amusing.

My current male gerbil is prone to tantrums when you do anything that annoys him. He enjoys his out of cage time, but merely tolerates being handled to and from it and so if you take too long to get him to his "fun" he will start getting restless and then kicking and digging in your hand if you still persist in holding him. I've only ever seen him wag his tail when he's afraid though.
He's 4 1/2 years old now so has mellowed out a lot, as when he was young he'd start tearing the cage apart in frustration if you handled him for even a few seconds!
I've had 4 gerbils in the past who have all begged to come out and play. 2 of them would just stand by the door of the cage and stare, as others have noted with their gerbils. 1 of my females would run back and forth to the 2 exits her cage had, whilst a young Male I had would frantically dash back and forth on the upper level of his cage like a madman and then would leap out into my hand when the lid was removed.
