Today, my gerbil Ginger escaped and went into my other girl gerbil (S'more)'s cage. They were fighting for about 5 seconds, when I separated them. Fortunately, for ginger, she wasn't hurt. Unfortunately, S'more has a gash in her eye. Should I take her to the doctors or will it heal itself? I don't have a digital camera with me so bear with me my 'artistic' abilites. She looks like this: Help me. I'm worried sick that she'll be infected or something. Is there a possibility that she will be blind? This is my first gerbil getting sick or hurt. Please help me or point to me a link that can help me. All replies will be appreciated. Thanks!

Is the gash actually IN her eye?
If it was just a small cut almost anywhere else in her body I wouldn't be too concerned but I agree, as its near/in her eye you should take her to the vet.

Yeah, if it is the eye, take her to vet, but cuts will heal. My Mini-Me had a fight with Rody during intro and Rody made a big cut below her tail. It healed quickly.

Just keep an eye on the cut. If you see it getting swollen, red or having discharge, she will need to go to the vet. Otherwise, it should heal quickly!

Definitely take your gerbil to the vet if the cut is in the eye. They'll probably give you an oral antibiotic to her and it should heal up really quick.
Keep us posted.

The gash (i found out later after the blood cleared) is not IN her eye, but on her eyelid. There is no sign of infection and I'm thankful for that. Thanks to all those who responded!

I would suggest neosporine on it but since it is near the eye, I would not chance it. Gerbils heal really quickly so if it were to get infected, there should be some signs of infection already.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I had the same wound on one of my females when I left the lid off (like i used to always do) and one of my males escaped his tank and decided a little viset was in order I don't think i could feel any worse . Anyways same place just above the eye and she healed up within the next couple of days no problem, i just cleaned it up and checked her for any other wounds and palced her back in the tank with her family. A little Hibitane or neosporen woudl do well to, but if your affriad to try it sicne it's so close to the eye, then just make sure it stays clean. I'm sure she will heal up just fine.

My gerbil's doing fine now. She looks alot better. THanks all of you for your help. She just seems to close her eyes alot. The only thing I'm afraid of is that she might be blind in one eye. WHen I put neosporin on her, won't she lick it off or get poisoned by eating it? She's with another gerbil also.

I had to use neosporin on Burkie's nose and she would sometimes rub it off and lick it, I don't think it hurts them. Glad to hear your gerbil recovered. ;D
