Two of our girls do this, but only sometimes. It's very cute. Not sure if it is related to their mood or personality, one of our girls is super excitable, the other is very bossy.

Ours sometimes talk, you can hear them if you hold them close to your ear. Strange clucking and muffled squeak type noises.
We've had a few singles that give loud squeaks when you pet them in the cage. Like the burmese one, doesn't like being handled, nips you if you put your fingers in her bed. Stroking her in the cage will give loud squeaks, she's free to move away, just one finger stroking her side - and she will sit squeaking. We can't tell if it's good or bad, fear, anger, happy. She doesn't seem bothered other than the squeaking, comes out looking for treats as soon as you stop.

The other one we had, pepper - in the profile pic (no longer with us), hated being picked up. She was far from timid, one of the oddest gerbils we had, picking her up resulted in a lot of loud squeaking, sort of mini eagle type sounds is about the only way to describe it. She would do it most times when out on your hand and lightly touch both of her sides as a clear "Don't" message
She was deaf, so maybe she didn't realise she was making sounds

Just be careful that the sounds you're hearing are actually communication and not some kind of respiratory issue.
I had a gerbil with a respiratory infection and he made regular squeaking / chirping sounds when active.
Hopefully it's not that though and is just them being very vocal.
I usually only hear mine when they're grooming each other and/or trying to steal a tasty treat from each other. The grooming one is softer, whilst the food stealing is a quite definite "back off now!" sound.
