one of my gerbils (pooky) seems to have a small growth on his tail. it looks like it dosent have any hair on it, and sticks out of the tail just a little bit. i only noticed it this evening, but im not sure how long its been there for. could this be serious? ive never experianced something like this before, so im not sure what it could be. any info would be great

what does it look like? Gerbil tails often devlop lumps after injury, has he been injured? I assume it's a sort of scar tissue that forms!! if unsure, as always, see vet

it is a 3mm diameter greyish lump, but he does not seem to react to me touching it (as if it hurts). i called a vet friend of my moms, but the vet does not specialize in small animals, so could only give sugestions. she said i should try and mesure it and then a couple days later, measure it again, and see if it has grown. so i will do this, and keep you posted.
ps. i dont think that it could be a wound healing, because he had his last fight with taco about 2 weeks ago. but it could be.

Hey Pooky,
Sorry to hear of Pookies issue. It could be scar tissue from overgrooming. Was it red raw to begin with, you said it is healing over now? I am confused in relation to timeing and symptoms.

sorry i have been away for quite a while, with homework and other things which needed compleation. when i first posted, it was a greyish lump about 3mm in diameter. it did not seem to get any larger, and then started to have a sort of hard scab like thing over top. when i checked it earlyer today, i found that the scab-like thing was all gone, and the lump has gotten much smaller. but there is still a small patch of hairless skin where it is.
i think that it wasent anything serious, but i will let you know if it gets worse.
thanks

Sounds like a small abcess... but it's obviously healed itself so that's great!

Hi Pooky: My gerbil has the same thing except his tail is a bit worse He has two lumps and it is deformed right at the beginning from his hind area. We bought him like that (because no one wanted him) and he seems to carry on just fine with it (it is hairless in those spots as well). Sounds like your little one is healing so hopefully ours will too. You've given me hope!! Janet

it took about 2 weeks for pooky's growth to go away, so it shouldn't take to long for your little friend to heal up. i hope your gerbil's growths dissapear soon.
