So today I came home from school and noticed something. My gerbils weren't sleeping one was just sitting there with its eyes half closed which the color of it is black. Then the other one which color is nutmeg was doing gerbil things chewing running and such. But then I noticed later when I went to feed them they kept chasing each other up and down. The black one would like bump its head into the other one chasing it back and forth then it stopped and they both stayed there. And now I'm noticing they keep doing it but not fighting. I've noticed the dominant one the black one is instigating it. And then sometimes after they chase each other the black one gets on top of the nutmeg one and like lays on it not humping or anything. Could they be about to fight?
Thanks need help fast so I know if I have to separate them.

I would separate them if you think they are fighting, sometimes they need a day or two to be alone, then try a split cage to see if they can back together, which means getting them used to each others' smells on the other side before trying them together. there is more info. on the board.

Ok well I have an extra cage but no top so which means it can jump out, but I might wait it out or not right now there not sleeping together and when one is near the other one the nutmeg one runs to his corner but right now he is digging underground where the black one is I am wait just incase

It does sounds like the black one is dominating the nutmeg. Play-chasing is actually pretty normal and as long as you don't find them getting into a ball of fights, it's probably just a game of playfights and dominating. How old are the 2s?

I got them in Octorber at my pet shop guessing they were at least a month old. I didn't see them get in ball fights it's just when the black one goes near the nutmeg one it runs off they're not sleeping together either which is a bad sign.

Hopefully they were more than a month old. Just going off of the ages of gerbils at the pet stores here, they were probably three months old.
Personally, I wouldn't separate them until I saw a fight and/or blood. Gerbils often play-fight in such a way that looks aggressive to us, but isn't. Do keep an eye on them though. Or if you want to be really sure, I guess you could go ahead and split the cage they're in now, so that they can't fight. Good luck!

Thanks Crittercrazy
When I woke up today I went and checked on them good news the nutmeg one was sleeping on top the black one. Then I went off and got ready for school and such then I came back home. And I even to and checked on them and the black one was in the same spot sleeping and the nutmeg one chewing and digging new tunnels. And then the black one came up and they both got on there hind legs and seemed like they were boxing then the nutmeg one ran like 5 inches stopped and the black came up and sniffed the nutmeg behind. So right now I can't decide if I should spirit them how do you tell if it's just play fighting or safe to keep them in?

Boxing and a little chasing (and the sniffing) sounds pretty normal to me. Just keep an eye on them.

Sorry as I couldn't post for little as I was away and didn't have access to internet. It was ok for at least 3 to 2 days they didn't chase or anything and slept together again. But just today I heard a bump and looked at the cage they chased each other around until the nutmeg chased he black on into the tunnel and corned it. I still don't see and ball fights or blood. But I think the nutmeg one is the dominant one but the black one doesn't want to lose it so it keeps starting up again.

Ok I just now watched the black one come up out of a tunnel and the nutmeg one sniffed it mouth then they jumped at each other and rolled for like 1 second then both ran of I need to know if I have to split them right now.
