Recently one of my girls has started to fill her food bowl with tissue/bedding. She brings it up from the cage floor to the higher level especially, just to chew it up and put it in the food bowl!
Does anyone know why she might be doing this?!

Quite a lot of my gerbils like to 'hide' their food with their bedding - I don't think it is anything to worry about.
Some just leave it in the open and others carry it all away and put it in a secret stash underground. All different.

It's perfectly normal, don't worry about it.

It is normal, they also have memory problems, as ours will forget about the food buried under the bedding or wood chips. If you clear it off then they'll rush up and be all excited at food "new" food in the cage.
They are not the smartest little guys sometimes. Same as the one we have that likes to pull out the bedding and pile it up against the water bottle at least once a week.

I keep the gerbil's food bowl under a wooden hut, which they seem to like. And even with that the first thing my gerbil boys do when I fill their bowl is cover it and the whole hut with bedding.

Every pair of gerbils i've owned have covered their food dish with bedding. They even put the boxes I give them to chew on top of the dish.
