My little guy has fleas - I should have known! I am the one who is a new owner (adopted from a pet store because we felt bad for him) He has a deformed tail and I noticed little red marks since we got him but then noticed his scratching himself - then I saw it - the ever useless no need to have on earth flea!
Any advise on what to do? Just a reminder, it is impossible to hold him at this stage (still adjusting though will crawl on my hand when it is in the cage). Many thanks!!
Janet

Your gerbil has fleas??? WOW! I have 10, and the house did have fleas when I got my 1st one, but my gerbies have NEVER had fleas. Um.... I have a spray thing I use for my bunny. It's safe for small animals.... It's the 8 in 1 brand, and it's called UltraCare, Flea and Tick Spray for small animals. I say try that.

Thanks Ritzie - he is a bit of a special case - he is 8 months old and has been in a tank at the pet store on his own for months. No doubt he came with the fleas as I thought they were flea signs when we brought him home but was very stupid to think perhaps otherwise. I think spraying him would really flip him out (we have him now 3 weeks this Saturday), but willing to give anything a try. Thank you so much for your quick reply. Janet

Janet,
I am not sure what to tell you other than to call a vet and see what they would reccommend. You might want to try a sand bath in the mean time.
Good luck and keep us posted.

you could just use some q-tips or cotton balls, or your fingers and pet him with the sparay. I haven't had to use it on my gerbies, but I just covered the bunny'd head and sprayed away. A sand bath would also be a good idea, and you can give him some pieces of orange, or just the rine. Even if he doesn't eat it. My friend's mom sprinkles orange rines around their dogs bed to help against fleas.

Hi Ritzie: I am going to try the orange idea Thank you! I am not at the stage yet that I can pet him or place a q-tip or cottonball We are still at the stage of placing my hand and arm into his cage so he can crawl all around it I have a feeling the adjustment period is going to take quite some time, until then I am still searching for a buddy for him. Thanks again for your reply ;D Janet

Where did you say you lived again? I may know of a male in need of a buddy as well. I'm in Washington.

Hi Ritzie: We live in Bermuda (little island off the coast of the Carolinas). It would be difficult for me to bring in a pup as it is an international island and super strict (understandably so) on bringing in furry cutie-pies Are you in Washington state or DC? Janet

You might be able to get insectidal shampoos, powders or sprays from your local petshop, i'm not sure how they would like that though :-\
