One of my male gerbils seems to be acting a bit weird. He is one of a trio who are about two years old. When I had them out of their tank yesterday, I noticed that he kept on 'pausing'. Every few moments, he would just stop moving and stand still for a few seconds, and then carry on. He also seemed to be moving around a bit more slowly than the other two.
But he seems otherwise totally fine. Eating, drinking, no injuries, etc. Is it maybe just that he's getting a bit old? All three of them have noticeably got slower and calmer over time (it's particularly noticeable now that I have a new pair of young gerbs next door to them!). But only this one gerbil is doing the mysterious pausing thing, and the other two still seem a bit more energetic.
Should I be worried?

I notice the something similar with my 3-1/2 year old girls. Both are active, eating, drinking, playing, destroying cardboard, etc. However, Goldberry will sit motionless for a long time and walks as if in slo-motion sometimes. She's been like this for the past six months. I'm guessing that she may be suffering from arthritis in her feet or some other degenerative condition that makes movement uncomfortable.
Not much you can do if this is the case except monitor for worsening symptoms. I make sure that she has easy access to her food and water - she still climbs to the highest perches in her cage topper - just a lot slower and more gingerly than her sister. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Eowyn (F) 11/12/2011 - 20 gallon with 20 gallon topper Goldberry (F) 11/12/2011 - 20 gallon with 20 gallon topper -------------------------------------------------------------- RIP Maire 11/6/2008 - 4/6/2011; Eithne 11/6/2008 - 10/10/2011 Lori 5/2/2011 - 7/24/2013; Mo 5/2/2011 - 1/14/2014; Carly 5/2/2011 - 5/21/2014 Arwen 11/12/2011 - 2/8/2015

I've seen it at any age, they will just stop and go into a little dream world.
