one of our pups has been having seizures. they don't seem to be extremely major, but she shakes for about 30 seconds or so. Would it be okay to have her adopted out or should I keep her and one of her sisters as well so she'll have company? I see it's not life threatening, but what would you do?

i think if you are going to rehome her it should be to someone who is experienced with gerbils or has had gerbils in the past that have suffered with seizures. If you cant find any of these then maybe you should keep her and a sister to keep her company. Thats just my opinion though ;D

It should be fine to rehome her. I have 2 females who as Pup's had seizures. One had them on and off for 2 months and then grew out of it, her little sister had one once and that was it. Both were Agoutis, which is suposably a colour that is more prone to seizures. Neither females have had a seizure since, and both are healthy happy gerbils. When she does have her seizures next time just make sure to put her in a dark calm area to come out of it, i find it can be quite tiring for a gerbil so they will want to sleep afterwards.

seizures can actually be quite common in some strains of gerbils (up to 20-40%) They often happen when the gerbil is exposed to some new stimulus. I's a genetic condition that usually begins at around 2 months of age, so I wouldn't breed any gerb that has had seizures. Unlike in other animlas, seizoures in gerbils don't appear to affect their health very much and don't require medication to control them.

True Megan If a gerbil exhibits a tendency to fit it needs a quiet, relaxed home and should NEVER be bred from. Gerbils are used for research into seizures due to their tendency to epileptic fits.
