Hello all.
I have an elderly gerbil who has got an itchy spot on the top of a removed scent gland scar and he is chewing it all the time and it is bleeding a fair bit.
He had the op to remove the gland in December and he has been totally fine since - but now - not so much. Now I am considering taking him to the vet for some kind or pain-killer/itch remover - but has anyone ever found this to be truely effective?
He is already over 3 years so I don't want to see him suffer with itching in this heat - and I saw some of you recommend Manuka Honey - does this actually work long term or is it a right pain to apply (and does it get all the bedding stuck to it?)
Any thoughts over the weekend will be most welcome.
I have already changed his bedding to super soft carefresh (from shavings) and have taken out any rough toys/tunnels/houses - and I took out the dust bath incase that was making it worse(?) or do people find that it actually helps as it is so cool to touch?

Don't know whether this would help with a gerbil, but one of our dogs has a reaction to flea bites - we do use flea treatment but the horrid things lurk in the grass & can still hop on & bite & Skye will literally chew herself raw. Anyway, we've discovered Sudocrem (nappy rash cream) works really well for her. It soothes the skin & also helps it heal. Plus it's not sticky & you only need a thin coating so it shouldn't end up being a bedding magnet

Thanks for that, I may ask around if that is ok for gerbils.
I will let you know what I find out...
