Hi Everybody!
I just found this forum a few days ago - all of the info is very cool. I have one question - I have read that you should clip your gerbils nails or take them to a vet and have them do it. I don't know of a vet in my area that cares for gerbil types so I think I am going to have to figure out how to do it on my own. Any advice? Thanks for any help!

As far as I've been told, its best never to attempt to cut the nails yourself, especially if you have dark nailed gerbils as the blood vessel is harder to see. Are they that long that they need cutting, and continual runs around a room or a hard surface wouldn't help?
Oh and nearly forgot!! Welcome to the forum!! ;D

I clip my gerbils nails when they start getting long with an ordinary human nail clipper, but I have realy good eyesight and I'm a vet student, so I really know what I'm doing (not that you don't!) I would also tend to shy away from clipping black nails for the same reason as stated above, you can't see their quicks (the part that bleeds when you cut them too short) If you were cutting nails and you couldn't get one to stop bleeding with some gentle pressure applied to the paw, you could use a styptic pencil (available in any drug store) or just some flour. Another alternative I've heard people discussing on the boards is putting a small brick in their cage, with the idea that they'll crawl on it and wear down their nails naturally. I've also heard peole talkign about sandpaper, but I personally think that may be too harsh for their skin. Wow, this kinda turned into a long-winded reply! I hope it helps you out! Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the advice - and the welcome!
I am pretty scared to try to do it on my own so I think I will go with something like a brick in there. They'll probably enjoy something new to explore. ;D
