Is my pied gerbil slate or black? He has lighter coloration in some areas, including around his eyes, so I've wondered if he is indeed a slate rather than black. The other guy was said to be a lilac but I believe he's either a sapphire or a dove. The fact that he has a brownish tone makes me think dove(based on this coloration in other animals) but I have no idea. It's difficult to show his true color in pictures. Their album

Oh, I forgot. Their litter mates & subsequent litter were all pied black(or slate), like my guy but without the deformed tail.

I'm no expert on slate verses black but I'm sure your pied is black. I think the light colouration is due to the white on him. As for the other one, he sure looks like a lilac to me.

They(pet store :/) DID say he was a lilac but he's very light-colored and has a brownish tone "in person." It's difficult to capture it on my phone but, when I look at pictures of lilacs/sapphires/doves, he seems somewhere in between a sapphire & dove?

Shooting Star recently said that Black and Slate is all about the eye shine. If they eyes reflect back a bit ruby-like then it is a Slate. So how about take load of flash shots of him facing you (from far away) and go for an average. If none show ruby, he is most likely Black (which he looks more like to me).
You said about the other siblings and litters - but what were the parents or auntie and uncles - this might be the only way to find a recessive colourpoint gene for your Dove or underwhite dilute for your Slate?
As for the Lilac/Sapphire/Dove scenario - yours looked Lilac first time, then a later image it looked lighter, so not sure. However, if he is Sapp/Dove the colourpoint genes are temperature sensitive, so it could be a dark Dove or a Light Sapphire. I even had sibling Sapphires who were different colours even. So unless there is something about the eyes to look out for with these 2 colours, I wouldn't like to say from your photos.

Third pic looks dove, the others look lilac. Pretty sure it's shades of the same colour as our dove guy turns lilac colour when wet........ we had to wash him due to inky paws and fur.
