=( The time has come to say goodbye to Data. The thing that really makes it hard is he seems in good health, but I can no longer keep him. I have to give him to an adoption center. I'm moving soon and I can't bring him with me (landlord's rules.) I'm concerned he'll end up with someone that knows nothing about gerbils or be adopted by a parent that just wants their kid to stop asking for a dog. He's in the last season of his life and I want him to have a happy comfortable retirement...but it's out of my hands.
=( very sad times.

Oh, no... I'm so sorry to hear this.
Can I ask: are you in the UK? If so, I might be able to help/adopt.

Oh no, my husband wants me to put one of our girls up for adoption too (she's still fairly young but she declanned from her sisters), I've never had to give up a pet before and if I really have to I would rather find her a loving home with someone I can trust or at least get to meet first (and maybe tell them if they ever don't want her anymore to contact me first). Have you tried listing him on any pet sites/craigslist/here?
I'm being sneaky with our girl currently, I've just ordered her a new cage (she can't live in the emergency tub forever) and will set her up in the kitchen out of the way, hopefully it'll be a while before my husband moans about her again lol, though I realise you don't have that choice/flexibility (we actually once had 3 male gerbils together in a 'no pets' flat that we hid in the wardrobe whenever there was an inspection XD

i hope you can find a way to keep him- did you ask the landlord because usually no pets only applies to cats/dogs and not caged animals or find someone you know who can keep him. I've had gerbils where no pets were allowed but I have always been able to keep my gerbils. How would a landlord know if you 'snuck' in a gerbil anway, or if you can't do that, say he is old and doesn't have long to live and you won't replace once he is gone. Try what you can before giving him up,okay?
Take care,
Tammy

There's no way - I'm renting a room in a house and everyone in the house is allergic to anything mammalian, dust, hay, the list goes on. They don't want a mammal in the house, period. I found a lady to foster him until he can be placed somewhere - I'll be taking him to her within the next couple days. Thanks for your kind words guys. It's nice to have some people that understand.
(PS, Rennmaus - that's really sweet of you <3 I live in the US though)

that is good you found someone to foster him and hope he finds a really good home, you can maybe tell them he needs a gerbil experienced home and someone to give him extra special attention. Sorry to hear you have to give him up, take care of yourself.

if you need any support there are some pet loss support groups-they help for those who loss pets in anyway and people on here I'm sure will gladly listen if you need to vent, etc. I've been wondering how you are doing and hope everything is going okay for you? take good care of yourself and know you gave Data (and Rory, Jack and Jean Luc) a good home.

Thanks <3 you're sweet. I've been processing it all pretty well I think. I just got back from handing him over to the adoption lady. She really nice and sweet and I know she'll take good care of him until he goes to his new home. Which, shouldn't be long because she already has two families interested in adopting him. One of them has a 12 year old girl and she's leaning toward them. I'm a little worried for him, but I included a 4/5 page care guide with his things so hopefully he will be ok. The adoption lady said she'd send pictures and let me know how things go etc.

that is good she will keep you informed with finding him a good home. How old is Data? I'm sure he will be fine wherever he goes, stay positive.
