Hi guys,
I have a lovely little gerbil called Dave and we have recently been having some issues with his weight.
He had soft poos/diarrhoea about a month ago, he doesn't tend to have fresh food or anything because he just doesn't seem to like it, and he would rather have dry food, so we knew there must be something wrong. At this time he was eating and drinking normally, but was losing weight. So, he went on antibiotics and after that the problem seemed to resolve and he put all his weight back on really quickly.
A month on, we have had the same problem again and again he has been given antibiotics and as before his poos have gone back to normal. However, since being on the antibiotics he has lost 30g, 12g of which have been lost in the last 4 days and we stopped the antibiotics 30th September. He is now just 100g, which is such a low weight for him because normally he would be around 140g.
He is eating, drinking and now pooing completely normally and he is still really active. He is about 2.
Has anyone else had any similar experiences? Could this be something internal that I can't do anything about (like a tumour somewhere)? I will be taking him to the vets again, but just wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar experience and what the outcome was.
Thanks a lot.

I have never had an experience like that, but I have had two gerbils both of which passed away because of tumors, so I can give you some information about the symptoms Dave would display if he has one. This website describes the symptoms of internal tumors much better than I could ever hope to: www.shawsheenrivergerbils.com/elders.htmlMy Alice had an abdominal tumor and followed this pattern exactly. My Jasmine had a brain tumor and I don’t think she really looked “fat” as described in the article (but she was running in circles so that was pretty much a dead giveaway since she didn’t have an ear infection). She had all the other symptoms though. Unfortunately I never weighed my gerbils so I can’t give you any info on their weight loss/gain. (Although I have read that rapid weight gain can indicate a tumor.) I never noticed that my gerbils had any problems with diarrhea. If it is a tumor, it doesn’t really seem like antibiotics would help, but they seemed to help Dave the first time around. That Dave is still very active is a good sign, hopefully the vet will find something that is fixable. Sorry that I don't have any information on what else this might be.
