I adopted 2 young sister gerbils about 2 months ago (so they are somewhere around 3 to 4 months old) and they have gotten along wonderfully since I've had them. Lilith (black/white dominant slightly larger) suddenly started a fight with Luna (silver submissive smaller). They normally play fight but this was different, I was able to stop them and Luna only lost a little clump of fur. I do not have a place to separate them because I live in a college dorm. At this moment I have Lilith in her plastic ball and Luna in the cage (10 gallons), but I have to go to work and can't leave her in the ball. I'm afraid they will fight to the death. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on what to do...I have out ruled most of the reasons for declanning. They don't seem to be fighting for dominance as Lilith stared the fight and Luna only tried to run away and hide. I have not changed any smells or food or etc....I need help...I don't want them to kill each other

sorry to hear about your girls having a fight, I do hope they will be okay but the only thing I can think of without getting another cage is to do a permanent split cage and make a proper divider. if they aren't getting along, a bin cage may work if you have a way to make a wire top for it and make a hole for the water bottle and attach to the top, bins come in different sizes and heights so one may work for a gerbil, or if you have to, a hamster cage but those aren't that great and don't like seeing gerbils in them, if that is all you have room for and for short term.

I thought about a new cage but I was told I'm only allowed to have one in my dorm or I have to get rid of them...or one of them but then luna or lilith would be lonely so I just don't know what to do

Sometimes gerbils start to fight if they don't have enough space in the tank. (At least that's what I have read.) Would you be able to upgrade the tank to a 20 gallon one? Or if it seems that they aren't getting along, you could do a permanent split cage (although 10 gallon would be too small for that, I think), or perhaps give one of them away, if you aren't allowed to have 2 tanks in your dorm.

a larger aquarium may be best then and if you can try to get them to stay together or a permanent split cage-there is good info. about those on here if you need more help.
