They could be doing this because they are board (what esle do you have in the cage with them?). Biting on the cage bars can lead to red, sore, hairless noses, that sometimes bleed, and can hurt a rodents teeth, making it hard for them to eat. Cages trully are not the best housing for gerbils. The ideal habitat for gerbils is a Aquarium, it keeps out any drafts (which can make them sick), and you can put a ton of bedding in for burrowing without it being tossed out and all over you home, and of course no bar chewing

There isn't much you can do about the chewing plastic except removing it. I used the plastic tubes conecting 2 tanks, and they chewed on the little steps inside untill it was flat, then they stopped. I ahev gerbils I cannot put any plastic in their tanks b/c they will chew it all up, i think they like the feel of it. Chewing plastic isn't so good for gerbils, if they swallow any it can make them sick, and they could die. So be careful they aren't chewing to much of it. I've heard others suggesting spraying Bitter Apple spray on the areas the animals are chewing, that may work.
Sounds like your gerbils have some fun toys to play with!

My girls chew on the bars of their cage (it's a topper on top of a tank) but that's usually because I don't give them their daily blowing... yes, I said blowing.... my GIRLS (but certianly NOT the boys) LOVE when you blow on them.... hum...
Your cage sounds cool, and you get some picts up?? Do they kick all their bedding out? I used a critter trail once... I ended up sealing off the back side and most of the front with packing tape because Iwas tired of vacuuming.... PICTS, PICTS!

well... they dont chew on the the bars...they chew on this soft plastic. its one of those habitrail modles...its actually mostly plastic and ive never seen them gnaw on the bars... Those habitrail habitats are made more for hamsters (who generally chew less than gerbils) and I don't think they make a great enclosure for gerbils. I prefer at least a 10 (20 long is better) gallon glass aquarium with lots of bedding for digging as others have said in this thread. it'll be a much better home for chew-crazy gerbils! -Megan
