I came home from work tonight to find two of my gerbils dead. They had been very lively this morning, and had been running in their wheel. They had both gotten a bit fat (b/c i was trying to feed the female a high protein diet in the event that she got pregnant, but i had cut back on the sunflower seeds for about a week. When i got home tonight they were both laying out next to each other in a corner in a way which they never lay. I scratched on the top of their cage and they didn't move. I don't know what happened to them...could they have gotten two fat and died from a heart attack running in the wheel i had just gotten them a few days earlier? i'm removing their cage from the room in case its some disease, but they were young and seemed fine this morning. I'm really sad. Does anyone have any idea what may have happend to them?

How young were they? I know that Ritzie was fine in the after noon, and the next evening she was dead. i have NO idea why. I'm sorry this happened! Ritzie died in June, and she would have been 1 year on August 31st.

Pip was no more than a year old and The Dude was about 3.5 months old.

I'm sorry about you loss. It must be hard, especially when two die at the same time!
I don't think that the weight would be the reason of death. It seem to me very unlikely that they both died at the same time from it. It is hard to say what would have been the true reason, can be many things. An post-mortem examination by a vet might tell you they reason, but even than the true reason cannot always be found. I've done these exams myself many times when I worked in a clinic for exotic animals, mostly on birds, but also on rodents like rats and mice. Sometimes we were able tell what infection or other problem was the cause of death, but sometimes we could also not find a conclusive answer.
Removing the cage from other gerbils or other rodents is always a good thing to do, just in case it is a contagious disease.

Ahh, so sorry about your gerbils! It does sound like some type of illness since they both died at the same time. Best wishes
