I was really curious as to what the best bedding is for gerbils, or possibly any other rodent. If you know or have an opinion, please let me know!

My gerbils prefer the fluffy Carefresh bedding as opposed to the aspen shavings. I originally had aspen but one of my gerbil's noses got irritated for some reason and when I switched to the fluff it healed and went away. The Carefresh brand can be expensive but there are cheaper brands that make the same product at other stores. One more thing, do not get cedar shavings because it is toxic to gerbils.

On the other hand my gerbils prefer dust extracted card board bedding, I started out with Carefresh (which imo is both expensive and comes out of the pack smelling like week old gerbil bedding), but one of my girls was really sneezy with it due to the amount of dust in carefresh (despite supposedly being low dust) and she stopped sneezing after I switched.

Ok thanks guys! I have blue Carefresh complete paper bedding. It's the small package so I have 2 and that's a lot for her cage! That's why her favorite thing is to burrow. Do you guys know if my brand is ok?

i buy Nepco aspen bedding, not sure if they sell it many places but I can get it in BC, Canada and it's from New York-it's not dusty at all, used it for many years with no issues.

Okay, I know this is a bit late, but personally, aspen mixed with carefresh has been my favorite. From my experience, aspen alone does not hold tunnels well, and carefresh alone is expensive, but when you mix them together, it's great. I also add a bit of timothy hay on top, my gerbils love to nibble on it and make nests out of it.

This reply is even later, but thank you! I might try the two together.

Hi. I'm also curious about this. I did a lot of research and my gerbils have Aspen bedding. Been brilliant for tunnels but lots of dust.
Just read a bad article from a vet saying Aspen isn't great as although gerbils look OK it is still damaging for them - and to use chopped up cardboard bedding like Ecobedding. But have read reviews that not good for tunnels!
I want them to be healthy AND happy in their environment. Has anyone else tried this chopped up cardboard?

I've used Carefresh, hay and aspen. however i'm going off aspen as it's really dusty and expensive. and i noticed my gerbils would leaves tons of it untouched, it's quite odd..

I like either Green Mile or Finacard - finely shredded cardboard. It compacts well to support tunnels. I mix it with hay.

Hi, I'm new here, but I've had a lot of experience with hamsters. I used to use Carefresh until they changed the formula. It smelled so bad that I decided that I didn't want my hamster using it. I switched to a bedding called Boxo and it worked just fine. That was only my experience with Carefresh. Maybe others had no problems at all. Ann

I'm so happy to hear what bedding you guys use. It gives me a very good idea of what bedding to use for my Luna, and the gerbil I will be getting soon by knowing your opinion on it. I personally use a mix of aspen and carefresh. (Thanks peppermintthegerbil )

I use kiln dried pine shavings and mix it with timothy hay. It's much cheaper then Carefresh and is not very dusty! If you do use this though make sure the bag says kiln dried because pine and cedar shavings can be very dangerous for gerbils!

Me too, just plain old kiln-dried pine shavings - mixed with hay, shredded paper and copious amounts of cardboard...
I have tried a few other beddings, but this is the one I prefer to buy and use for now - and luckily I haven't yet had any problems with it.
