yesterday when i went to see molly she had some dried blood around her eye . She could of cought it on the water bottle holder but im not sure as i couldnt see any actual injury. She was on heat and acting crazy so she could of banged into something. She seems fine in her self though. shes eating drinking and extremly active like always . I wiped away the dried blood with a peice of wet tissue and she didnt seem to mind me touching it so i dont think she is in pain. Do you think its ok or is there something i should do or know. Or is there any other reason why this could have happened. thanx everyone pixytwinkle

I think your right that it is from a scratch or knock. If you can't see the injury it is probably pretty minor and should heal fine. It could also be the gerbil equivalent of 'sleep', caused by getting some dust or similar in the eye. Poryphrins make gerbil sleep red and it can look like blood. Either way unless she shows signs of infection or illness I suspect this is a one off incident that you need not worry about.

I think the same as Doomgerbiluk, most likely the red-coloured gerbil sleep.

You know gerbil mucus is red, right? And it often appears due to an allergy. I once had one of mine suddenly develop an aspen allergy after being on it for months with no problems. It can appear at the nose and eyes.

We have a male Dove who has one eye that he doesn't open fully all the time. He can if he wants to but most of the time it's squinty. He has been this way since birth and it doesn't usually bother him. We do keep watch however for red mucus around this eye. Twice now we have had to remove a seed husk (probably millet) from the eye with a swab dipped in filtered water. Keith & Luana Green Mt. Gerbils AGS members
