I know I spelt it wrong but I'm pretty sure you know what I mean. What causes it? I just found some in my gerbil's cage. And I don't know why. Is it dangerous to their health? Are they sick? Am I using the right type of bedding, food, and toys? PLEASE HELP! vic!

Diarheao must always be taken seriously. It could be a symptom of e-coli, salmonella, enteritis, injury, tyzzers, poor diet. Your gerbil needs to see the vet ASAP. Ensure full hygeine precautions between tanks (hand washing, no exchange of toys etc etc the sick gerbil and his cagemates should be quaratined, preferrably with two doors between them and your other stock.

As Doom said, in gerbils diarrhea is usually caused by an infectious agent (ie bacteria) but can be caused by other things. You need to examine the makeup of his diet (usually a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet can cause diarrhea since gerbils are desert animals and don't require much water) what bedding he is being kept on, and if any stressors have been added to his life as of late. I definitely don't think a trip to the vet is out of the question. Let us know how he's doing, ok?

I don't know what it was for. What do you mean by that Vic? I'm a little confused. Were you feeding lots of fresh fruits or something? If they seem to be doing better, I would just watch them very closely for signs of diarrhea again. Hrmph. It really bugs me when parents let their kids get pets then say they can't be taken to the vet when they are sick, just because they're gerbils. *steps off soapbox* -Megan
