Spruce is a two year old gerbil without a mate. Last week I noticed that he had several large scabs on his back. They really reminded me of gerbil fighting wounds. I can't find anything in his cage that could cause that damage. The only thing I could think of is the cat sticking his paw between the bars, but I never let the cats downstairs unless I am there.
Anyone have ideas?

that is a little strange. I doubt he can chew on his own back Maybe the cat, or ring worm? That leave scabby parts. Whats in his tank with him?

I went downstairs and noticed that Spruce is sitting on the top level of his habitat, away from the bedding. He kept scratching his ears. I looked through his fur and didn't find anything.
Then I picked up Aspen. He has been getting thin over the last couple of months and the vet hasn't been able to find anything. Lately, he has lost even more weight. I looked at his bottom and he was crawling with mites. I think this explains the recent downturn. I'm assuming this came from the new bedding I have been trying - BetaChips.
I'm taking him into the vet on monday and getting some ivermectin. Then I will try and do the first treatment that night.

oh i hate mites i know how you feel. the vets in my hometown where i live said they couldnt give me that because they didnt know the right doseage. i of course was thinking what kinda vets is this? my moms vets in champion thats a little farther away gave missy treatments like a water shot under hte skin and some pill i had to crush up and put in water for her to eat it. I dont get it. How come some vets are like that? I hope you can clear your mite problems. good luck!

I dont get it. How come some vets are like that? Unfortunately, pocket pet medicine is not a subject that we get a lot of in school. It is a very small portion of our national board examinations (the test we take to get liscenced in veterinary medicine) and some veterinarians just choose not to learn about treating rodents and other small animals. It's a shame, but we learn SO MUCH about so many different animals in school, we tend to pick and choose the ones we work with the most frequently once we're done to provide the best care possible to those particular species. Being a vet is tough! -Megan

So the gerbils are back home. I still haven't finished bleaching everything (my lungs started to hurt), so they are staying a different part of the basement. My vet decided to go with Revolution instead of Ivermectin. I guess he feels it is safer.
Anyway, I will keep you updated with the progress. I hope these little buggers are gone for good!

I've never had to deal with mites, but I've heard they can be a nightmare to get rid of. Best of luck in getting the problem cleared up quickly.
Do you still think they came in with the new bedding? What kind of bedding is BetaChips?

Oh no, Queen you must be madder than heck at that bedding company. Just posting their product name here and your experience should teach them a lesson! Poor you! Hope you get rid of them ok.
