HELP! I have two gerbils that have recently had babies, a litter of 6. about a week ago, I noticed one of them impulsivly liking the wall (I have a glass aquarium) and I couldn't make her stop doing it no matter how hard I tried. Them she promply got really sick. I could hear her making clicking noises and her fur got ruffled and she got really cold. I tried really hard, but she died anyway. It was really sad. And just today, I noticed another one of the babies doing the same impulsive wall-licking thing. What should I do? Why are they getting sick? How can I stop this? I really would appreciate any help anyone could give me on this.

If they are making a clicking sound when they breathe it's a symptom of a respitory infection and should be taken to a vet. They will require an antibiotic to get well. The licking of the tank wall is trying to get water, it's instinctive since they get their water in the wild from licking things with dew on them. Good Luck, Keith & Luana Green Mt. Gerbils

To add to the previous post- they may be licking the wall and getting sick because their mother isn't producing enough milk and/or good quality milk for the pups. They are getting weak, dehydrated, and subsequently sick. I would suggest to not breed from this pair again and you need to (a) get aintbiotics for the babies' respiratory infection and (b) get some kitten milk replacer to supplement the pups or try to wean them to solid foods and offer things like cucumber or sliced grape as a source of water for hte pups if they're old enough.
