Today sure is a crappy day for me. I found Blazer my 2 year old mottled male dead in his tank. Blazer has always been healthy and active, trully if anyways was going to go at a young age I would have thought his skinny/sickly looking brother. I was playing with Blazer last night, he was his chipper self. Today, i find him dead. He seemed to come out of the nest and then just died, his back legs were together, his front ones apart, teeth showing, tail nice and curved, and what i thought was strange is a little poop half showing from his little gerbil bum. Is that a sign for anything?
I just want to know if there is a reason for his death. He is a pet store gerbil, most likely inbred (him & his brother are not very big), but I've owned 3 other pet store bred gerbils and they lived to at least 3.

The misconception is that 2 is young In the wild gerbils do not live to their 1st birthday. Our domestic pet gerbils can live from 18mths to 6 years, often with few signs of aging. BUT this means natural deaths at 2 are not abnormal. There is probably no explanation of his death. He sounds to have gone peacefully. I am sorry to hear of your loss though and hope you will remember all the good times fondly.

<hugs> Thanks Doom. I've just never had a gerbil die under the age of three, so to me this is strange. I'm glad I got to play with him and know he was happy before he did go.
I got one of our split cages done tonight, it just needs a good cleaning. I think i'm going to try and split cgae Chevy (Blazer brother & tank mate) with one of his sons that de-clanned on me a while back. Hopefully this pair will work out.

I had a few of mine go at 8 months (from a BAD breeding...) And then a few go at 2-2.5 years... It may seem like all my gerbils live super long, especially since most of mine now are 3-4 years, but that's because they've outlived the others. I'm sorry to hear about your loss Andrea, but it sounds like he went peacefully. *HUGS*
