Hello. I'm knew to this site and I'm not sure if there are other threads about this but my gerbil is 3 and a half and she has blood coming out of her "butt." I'm 13 so I can't drive (duh) and I asked if my grandmother could take me to the vet to ask them if something was wrong. I'm really worried!

Hm... is there an actual wound? Can you see any cuts or scratches oozing?

They do have a mentrual cycle in a way (unless egg release is after mating?) but I've never seen any of my girls having a gerbily period And by three and a half I'd expect her to be an old granny, so to speak, so her "flirty" part of her life would've gone by then!

lol you mean oestrus cycle I think
Personally I would suggest any unexpected bleeding needs a vets opinion. Gerbils do sometimes bleed from that area just before giving birth I've noticed. After asking an expert I have been advised infection, organ failure or both, and a vets trip is essential.

Gerbils definitely do not. I would suggest posting some pictures if you can since your grandmother doesn't want to take you to the vet, though that would be the best thing to do. -Megan

People and Dogs are about the only animals that have 'periods'. I do remember however that my female gerbil bled after mating, is this gerbil with a male gerbil? Is it still bleeding, for how lonf? is is a little, alot? is there a wound?

No my gerbil doesn't mate (she lives with her daughter) and I'll try to get some pictures. The bleeding stopped but it might start again so I'm going to keep checking.

People and Dogs are about the only animals that have 'periods' Actually Andrea, dogs don't have periods. There are a few species of primates that do, including humans. A period is when the entire endometrial lining of the female is sloughed from the uterus and expelled. While dogs do bleed a little while they're in heat, they don't slough their endometrial lining, they resorb it. Just thought I'd let you know -Megan

I actually wasn't aware of the details, very cool. Either way there are not many female animals that 'bleed', so if you have an female animal bleeding from her vagina and she is not a dog, Primate of sorts, or a Person you will want to see a Vet as it is abnormal.
