Burkie's tail fur seems to be thinning, enough to see the skin under a light. Any causes for this, or treatments?

ash has lost a little bit of fur around the base of his tail (just on one side though) it doesn't bother him at all, so i just thought it was Leo doing some power-grooming ;D lol you should post a pic, that might help

I tried taking pics but they all came out blurry. In some places, you can see the skin of the tale. Not in full view, but with some fur over it, but you can still see it. Burkie will be 2 years old this summer.

It is spring and some of the gerbils are shedding, which could be one reason.

Old people lose their hair. So do old dogs...
I noticed today that Jason is missing some of his tail hairs too... but he also ate his own toes off once.... so I don't worry. I 'd say Burkies problem is just natural with age.

I'm thinking age also. I noticed Blazers tail to be pretty thinning as he was getting older.

Are you sure? I don't think 1.5 years is considered old.

Are you sure? I don't think 1.5 years is considered old. I didn't think 2 was old, but I was told otherwise When Blazer died But like Sandy said, it could be part of shedding. Has the weather changed recently where you are?

2 years old is around average for a petshop gerbie i'd say but well bred gerbils live longer, that is another benefit of getting gerbils from breeders really but yes, it could just be that Burkie is shedding ;D

Well when i scratch her ears sometimes (she loves it) fur comes out. It's almost spring so she must be shedding.

Two of my gerbils have lost some fur around the base of their tails. It's a little patch, almost on the side, and you can see the skin underneath it. I was quite worried but I didn't realise it could be that they are shedding. Does anyone know if it will grow back? Or if it will get any worse? They don't appear to be scratching at it or in any pain.
