Hiya, My gerbil Faith is two and a half and has been sickly for a while. Her litter mate died a couple of months ago and she has pretty much gone down hill since then. She developed pneumonia about 5 weeks ago and has been on antibiotics ever since but just seems to be getting worse slowly. She is still eating and taking her drugs but I am a bit concerned that she won't be keeping her teeth down. Most of the time she stays in bed and when she is up she looks like her breathing is really difficult. Whenever we think it is time to call the vet and put her to sleep she perks right up, hops around the cage and has a chewl of her toys. Do you think there is any hope of her getting better or should we let her die peacefully? I know no one can make this descion for us but I have gotten really great advice from this board before and i would be grateful to hear any simialr experiences or advice people have. Many Thanks, Lucy

the operative phrase is quality of life. You may wish to ensure the room has adequate ventilation and humidity. One thing that can help (please don't shoot me down in flames people) is a wire hamster cage. Only if your room is non-draughty though. the increased ventilation may help if shes affected by dust in her bedding. Otherwise you have to decide when her quality if life is, on balance, too poor.
