One of my little Gerbils has a very little bit of reddish/brown gunk coming out of her eyes. Does anyone know what this is and what could be causing it?
Thanks.

The red stuff is probably mucus which is normally a sign of an allergic reaction to something. What substrate do you use in your tank? If it's wood shavings that's probably your most likely culprit and you may want to think about changing to something else.

I was using wood shavings (not cedar), but after digging through some old posts on here I read that wood shavings can cause some Gerbils to get allergic. I have already switched (permenatly) to carefresh bedding. Her eyes don't seem to be "weeping" red gunk anymore, but she is "squinting" and she is very lathargic... I gave her some toilet paper (which she is sleeping in) and moved her water bottle to where she is. Is there anything else I can do??? Thanks.

Well you're doing the right thing. You might want to watch out for a respiratory infection (RI) if she seems a bit lethargic.
Have you noticed any clicking sounds coming from her chest or any mucus coming from her nose as well as her eyes?
If not then I wouldn't worry too much at the moment, you're doing the right thing, make sure she's kept warm and has plenty of fluids.
I’d monitor her for the next couple of days and if she does seem to get any worse, I would suggest you take her to a vet to get some antibiotics.

She didn't seem as lethargic this morning, her eyes looked much better too... I'll keep watching her. Thanks.

Alright, I picked her up to see if there was any more gunk in her eyes. There wasn't. But I heard a couple clicks. I don't have a vet who treats Gerbils up here (to my knowledge) but I found that sticky topic on Ornacycline to treat respitory infections so I'll pick some of that up at the pet store today and cross my fingers...
