Is there any kind of eye sickness gerbils can get? Any information on it?
The tankmage to a gerbil that suddenly passed away today, it seems she has a bit of ickies in the inside corner of her one eye. It's not really noticable, i may be over reacting. But since her tankmate died today with no signs of illness I'm a bit worried.

It could be secretions from the harderian gland in the eye? When an animal is`nt feeling too great, or has been under some stress (possibly due to the fact the cage mate has died?) they can produce `red tears` from the gland behind the eye. This in itself is`nt worrying, but I would certainly make sure the remaining gerbil is`nt stressed by losing his/her partner. make sure also that the cage is very clean.
Keep a close eye on things and I hope this helps you a little.

Thank for the input Max. I've been watching her everyday, and she looks/acts fine. there is no more gookies in her eye, which is good. I didn't want to split cage her with another gerbil if she ended up being ill.
Hopefully she will take on a new friend without any problems.
