Hi all. My three girls in the same tank are getting hair loss on the top side of their tails. They have a different wheel than the rest, one of those larger mesh type ones. Is hair loss on the top concurent with wheel injury? It is as the base of the tail. Thank! It is not any kind of infestation, is it?

Hey Shari-
Jsut saw your post. One of the things that can casue air loss is ringworm infection, but I have a feeling the whole household would know if that was the case (itchy itchy! I've had ringworm and it's not pleasant!). I have a schimmel who's a little older and her tail is signifcantly thinner than all my other gerbils, so it may just be an age thing. If they're not biting/chewing tehmselves or itchy, I wouldn't worry too much.

Pep has lost the hair on either side of his tail before. It looked strange, but it grew back eventually. I suspect it was a wheel "injury"--the tail got stuck and the fur got stripped off somehow. Other than that, I have never had a problem with the mesh wheels.
So, if the girls are still acting normally, I wouldn't worry about it.
