A few weeks ago I bought 4 baby gerbils (females), all from the same litter (atleast the petshop said so ). These were my first gerbils btw, and information from the petshop was somewhat lacking, with regards to their health.
Anyway, I brought them home and decorated their tank with pine shavings, water, food (from the petshop, which turned out to be 30% sunflower seeds which I sorted out manually), a few brances to gnaw on and a sand bath. It was quite cuddly and all the pups seemed to like it alot.
The first thing I noticed was that one of them sounded different from the others, a dinstinctive clicking sound, and it was a bit smaller than its litter mates. At first this was quite endearing and I didnt think much of it, and left it at that. After a week (give or take a day) I was browsing the web and stumbled apon a gerbil info page where I saw something called respiratory infection, and I got concerned since most of the symptoms were there. I proceeded with a few recommended home remedies; warmth ( a small spotlight in one corner of the cage), plenty of food and rest. After a few days little Crocus seemed to get better, more active and it was finally starting to grow again. Her fur looks a lot better too.
Well, when it rains it pours as they say, and now theres a new problem. Crocus seems to have a severe problem with balance, falling to her right side when walking or cleaning herself. She's still eating and drinking though, but the balance issue is getting worse. At the moment she is functioning as well as the others, eating, deinking and playing like shes always done, but I'm getting a bit nervous seeing as her balance only gets worse.
If anyone have any tips or ideas, feel free to tell me. At the moment Im just really mad at the people at the petshop. Not because they sold it to me, but that they apparently dont check the health of their animals .
PS. The pup also has had 2 epeleptic seizures (that Ive seen) the poor thing.
