Hi
So my gerbil has been acting really weird around his water bottle lately. Either that or the bottle is broken.
About a week ago my mum noticed pebbles (my gerbil) looked really thirsty. So she squeezed the bottle for him and as soon as he saw it dripping he rushed over and drank - clearly desperate for water. She ran her finger over the ball at the end of the bottle and no water was coming out. She told me about this.
The next day I squeezed the bottle again so he could drink and then took it out to examine it. I ran my finger over the ball and water was coming out this time. I held it at all different angles but still it was working. I put it back in the cage and checked once more- still working.
The next day I check on my gerbil again. I squeeze the bottle and he rushes up and drinks for ages, like he hasn't had water in ages, even though the bottle is still working.
He is still doing this now even though I have checked and he could drink any time if he needed to since the bottle is working. However every time I squeeze the bottle to force water out he runs up and gulps it down like he's really thirsty.
1. Why is my gerbil drinking so much? 2. Why is he not drinking on his own, only when I squeeze the bottle to force drips out?
For reference, he is about 3 years old and it has been hot in my country lately but for the past week or two the weather has cooled down a lot.
Thanks!
Lauren the human and pebbles the gerbil xx

older gerbils' can drink more, and he also could just like it when you squeeze the bottle. How old is the bottle? it may be harder for him to get the water out, so maybe offer him a bowl(I used to for my girls, and put it on an upside down tin that was flat so bedding wouldn't get in it) or buy another bottle(or type of bottle) and make sure it has an easy ball to get water out. Sometimes' the ball may be stiff and it's hard for a gerbil to get it out. I hope Pebbles can get enough water. I have critter canteen from superpet and all have worked fine and seems' easy for any gerbils' I've had to use it. Pebbles' is a cute name, I had a guinea pig named Pebbles. take care, Tammy
