Hi, Today, I noticed Silvia Sleeping on the opposite side of the cage. Princess was sleeping in their house. Silvia just decided to go to sleep in an opposite corner. I know they've taken naps before wherever they feel like it, but they usually wake up and then go into the house. Today, Silvia started making a new nest with tissues and bedding on the opposite side, I put in some new tissues for her, and she moved them to her new spot. Princess at one point was napping next to Silvia, but then went back into their house. I was thinking maybe the girls are fighting, but they do their normal thing with the noses together, trying to clean and smell each other. Theres no signs of fighting and no clicking/distress to note. This is really weird for silvia however. She has been acting slightly weird recently, but nothing out of the ordinary, mostly knawing on the wood parts of the cage and staying up late. (Do gerbils teeth?- her teeth look equal and normal). Her First birthday is just a few days away. Have any of you experianced this before? what are the signs of gerbils declanning? There cage with only two gerbils in it is somewhere around 40 gallons I think, and it's got 3 levels, is pretty big compared to alot of people's here. On the left behind the tissues is where silvia is sleeping and on the right in the box is where princess is sleeping.

If there ar eno signs of de-clanning then I wouldnt worry much. They just may be having a "disagreement" on where to sleep. I saw this happen once with my same sex pair of gerbils. After a day or so they went right back to normal. The only other time I know of that this is common is when a female is about ready to give birth. She kicks the make out of the nest & he has his own for the first night or so. Any Chance of that being the case ?!?!?

gerbils sometimes sleep seperately when it's really hot weather and they don't need eachother's body heat (and i can tell you, today was absolutely boiling!! not ideal weather for doing exams in (there were 180 of us crammed into 1 hall with no air conditioning it was bad)) lol so that's probably why

Hee,hee! Ash ;D Wow it's been 26 degrees here today too, although the thermometer on the girlies tank only reads 22 degrees they're still tucked up in their house together! Phew!! I'm suprised they've not moved out! Bon and Mais have had 'bed moving sessions' before now, but they've always gone 'together' with Bon usually making the new bed LOL! Bless her! ;D I wouldn't be TOO worried at this point, but like everyone else says, keep an eye and see what develops. Caroline

hehe, well at least the SATs are over now and i have a bit of freedom n_n the maths paper was hard, might just've been able to scrape a level 8 there...(or not lol) but anyhoo, apparently it's going to be around 30 oC next week! i might have to invest in a cheap air-cooler for the gerbil room if it gets too hot!

There have been many times when I've found some of my happy friends sleeping apart, usually in the middle of summer. Some even dig themselves out a clean corner and lay flat on the cooler glass of the aquariums. Before I moved, I kept them under a ceiling fan and kept it on low speed all summer. No ceiling fan in my new apartment, so I may need to get a small/gentle breeze oscillating fan for all my critters.
On cooler days, they were back together just fine, and all other non-sleeping behavior was nomal.
If you cool the room down and they still don't come back together, it's possible one is just moody for now. Esp if one is pregnant. If everything else is normal, I wouldn't worry about it.
