DAISY JUST CAUGHT AND 'ATE' A HOUSE FLY WILL SHE BE OK We've just been up in the playroom and a rather dopey black house fly landed on the carpet. Daisy spied it, pounced and shot off under the quilt cover with it. A few seconds later she shot out with Bonnie close on her heels and slammed into a cardboard box where there was alot of scuffling noises. Another few seconds and she emerged and the fly was gone!!!! - She scoffed it! She then spent about another 3-4 minutes scratching herself all over and jumping about! Was this just the excitement or will she come to any harm from eating it? They are both back in their tank now and Daisy seems ok, although she's still a bit itchy I suppose what worries me is that, last summer I squashed a house fly on my kitchen window (on purpose) and it had horrible little worms inside it - what if this fly has wormy things too and Daisy has just ate some Anyone? crumbs! I obviously don't have any experience to draw on here, but I'm sure she'll be fine. I'm sure I read a post previously where someone said their gerbils caught and ate flies quite regularly - they had developed a knack for catching them - plus, gerbils in the wild will eat all sorts of grubs and insects so she was really just doing what comes naturally. My advice would be to watch her in case she gets the runs or something but I'm sure it will be ok hth Anna

Thanks Pipgerb! She's tucked herself up in her house with Bonnie - so I'll have to wait and see if she's ok when she next gets up It was just such funny behaviour after she caught it. It was as if she was on a fly catching 'high'!!! zooming about the room, all jumpy and itchy - odd eh! Bonnie had a go at catching it first - but she missed that's when Daisy got it. Do they act like this when they are given crickets? Caroline

In the wild they'd eat bugs anyway Caz Their source of a little meat She should be fine - just keep a close eye that she doesn't start to feel icky or anything. (talented hunter isn't she!)

Thanks Whitty! Sorry, just a bit worried as never seen Daisy go 'nutty' like that before and James was really upset and thought she was going to die! Probably fussing about nothing she should be up soon (been asleep since) so hopefully she'll be ok Caroline

lol she'll be absolutely fine after all, they do eat mealworms and crickets and that my old gerbil, Rocky, ate a house fly once when he ran around on my window sill. he ate it really delicately, carefully picking off the wings and legs...i was pretty impressed seeing as he'd never eaten anything like it before he was such an awesome little gerbil gerbs sometimes go alittle carzy when they get dust mites and fibres and stuff in their fur. mine always do this when i've had them on the carpet too long

I was speaking to my sister-in-law about this earlier and she said flies have tiny little hairs that fall off! Perhaps this is what was making Daisy itch so much Love the story Ash, and you could be right about being on the carpet too long!?!?!?!?! They do seem to scratch more when they've been in the playroom which is carpeted (newish carpet I hasten to add) I'd love to see them go for a cricket sometime - can I catch a wild grasshopper/cricket for them? Caroline Oh, Daisy seems OK tonight - no ill effects so far....
